Why Black Spray Paint is the Best Halloween Decoration

Many years ago I joined some good friends for a Halloween party. While I waited for them to finish getting ready, I waited in their living room admiring their really cool Halloween decorations.

Being a huge fan of all things related to holiday decor, I asked my friend’s roommate where they got all these cool things?! The answer: most were thrift store ideas which received a fresh coat of black spray paint!

The next few Halloweens were a bit crazy, so I never got around to trying this idea out until now!

Between the thrift store and the dollar store, we found quite a few things to freshen up our Halloween setup!

Haunted House

My son’s favorite is this house. It started as a somewhat ugly and worn Christmas village piece. The kind that has a hole in the back for lights! For this one, I did prime it first and then sprayed it black. Then, with some dark purple nail polish, I added some highlights to the window shutters and tried to make the wreaths on the doors look a bit like pumpkins with some orange nail polish. Add the purple light strand from the Dollar Store, and you’re all ready for spooky! In the words of my two year-old, “Pretty Scary!”

Witches Cauldron

Apparently I forgot the before picture of this one, but when I stumbled on this at the thrift store, it was gold in color but reminded me of a cauldron! Fresh coat of black paint, and voila!

We also made a Halloween snack mix to turn this into a snack bowl! Our mix used: Peanut Butter Chex, Chocolate Teddy Grahams, Goldfish, Candy Corn, Candy Pumpkins, and marshmallows.

Spooky Drippy Candles

At the Dollar Store we picked up some glass candles. I used hot glue to add fake wax drips down the sides (puffy paint would work too, and may stick better, but would take longer to dry). Stick a little tape into the top of the candle so you don’t paint the actual candle part, then, spray paint!

If you’re like us and a little weary of open flame just sitting around with kids, pick up these from the Dollar Store as well!

Get Imaginative

Recently, we were cleaning up some of my Grandma’s things, and they were going to toss this broken knick-knack she had. I thought it would glue back together easily enough, and with some black paint make a great Halloween decoration, so I rescued it from the garbage!

You can do all kinds of fun things with candlesticks! I love this idea, but ended up going with an orange orb instead. Or you can paint candlesticks or blocks or whatever to use as platforms for your other decorations!

One thing my friend had that I’m still on the lookout for is one of those desktop water fountains. Paint it black and color the water red and it’s a spooky fountain!

Or, try cool paint like this!

Look around at what you already have to turn into an awesome Halloween decoration! Happy Halloween!!!
