When my parents named me, they didn’t give me a middle name. Supposedly so that my maiden name would become my middle name upon marriage. That’s cool and all, but then I didn’t get married for a while. So I complained, A LOT, about not having a middle name.
When I finally got married, I was THRILLED to take my husband’s name and move my maiden name over to my middle name.
It’s taken a little adjustment, but 3+ years later, I’m accustomed to my name. But when I had to initial a bunch of things at work the other day, I realized that while I know my name, I don’t know my initials!
So I set out to ingrain my initials into my mind! The first thing I thought to do was have some monogrammed decor around the house to reinforce it!
I also happened to have two things on hand: a huge bin of fake flowers leftover from our wedding and a big pile of branches in my backyard (my husband’s been pruning). We’re pretty sentimental around here so I knew incorporating these things would
Roses were the theme of our wedding, because we both love them! Here’s how to make something similar!
Flower Monogram
To start, I got a styrofoam block approximately 2 inches thick, and 12 inches wide by 18 inches long. With a sharpie, I traced my R onto the styrofoam. You can tell from the black lines that I redrew them a few times until I liked the shape! (We’re covering this up, so you can too!) Cut the excess styrofoam off around your outline.
I used a variety of flower sizes, but overall you’ll need about 100-200 blooms. Use wire cutters to clip the stems so there’s about a half-inch stem from the bottom of the flower base.
From here, start pushing in flowers! Insert the small stem directly into the styrofoam. Fill the space so you can’t see the styrofoam any longer. You can leave a bit more space between flowers than I did if you want your blooms a bit more opened. I liked the bud look so I positioned the flowers closely together. I used a flower pin on the back for the monogram to be able to hang.
Stick Monogram
The hardest part about this one is getting longer straight sticks. In order to cover all of the space you need your stick fairly straight, or you have to do multiple layers of sticks!
I started with a sheet of cardboard, approximately 12 inches by 18 inches. (Those diaper boxes come in handy!) Again, I drew my R in sharpie until I got the shape I wanted. Then I grabbed my snippers and my pile of branches. After snipping all the offshoots off of them, I held the straightest part of the stick up to the monogram and cut it to the appropriate length.

After I was happy with the sticks, I found two red roses (small enough they didn’t overwhelm my project) to represent my husband and me, tied them with a red ribbon (this ribbon is actually saved from a bouquet he’s given me) and then hot glued the flowers to the sticks. Another scrap of the ribbon was glued to the back to hang the monogram. Voila!
