Easiest Construction Birthday Cake Ever
(This post contains affiliate links.)
Today our oldest turns two! Yay! He’s a big fan of construction vehicles lately, so I decided to incorporate that into his birthday cake. But, blue is his favorite color lately (not so much the yellow or orange for construction) so I decided to be a little atypical here and incorporate the blue.
Things You Need:
- Chocolate Cake Batter (Mix or from scratch, we won’t judge!)
- Springform Pan
- Chocolate Frosting (I hate yucky frosting, so we made a simple chocolate buttercream)
- Construction Vehicles
- Various Sprinkles
First, we baked the cake. We just used the Betty Crocker Devil’s Food cake mix, as instructed on the box. After mixing it up, we baked it in our spring-form pan as per the instructions of the mix.
The most important step is letting the cake cool. It cools fastest if you can get it out of the pan, though I had to let it cool a bit in order to get it out!
Birthdays are nature’s way of telling us to eat more cake, so dig in!

Once it was cool to the touch, I used a knife to cut a bit of the roundish part off the top to make it a bit more level. Plus we needed “dirt”! Then, before frosting, I used a spoon to scoop out a little hole about 11/2 inch wide.
All the cake I cut off and scooped out I kept and crumbled, then added the sprinkles and mixed it all up.
Spreading the frosting while holding a baby was fun, but we managed to make do! I frosted everything but the hole I had made.
After frosting, I scooped some of my “dirt”
The only real problem was that I had to hide the cake from him until candle time so he didn’t want the toys! Happy Birthday, buddy!
